Sismantilles earthquake mapping project. Close-up of hydrophone equipment used in the Sismantilles program. The goal of this Franco-German project is to map out the seismogenic zone of the Caribbean. The seismogenic zone is the range of depths within the crust or lithosphere over which most earthquakes are initiated. This information will help to estimate the maximum magnitude of a probable future earthquake, and allow public alerts to be adapted accordingly. Photographed in the West Indies.
