When this has dried slightly theprocess of sole laying takes place. The sole is putin place and pressed firmly upon the shoe and weltin the sole laying machine, remaining in the machinea sufficient length of time for the cement to set Rough Rounding. A machine gauges the distanceat which the cutting shall be done from the last,cutting usually wider on the outside of the shoethan on the inside and reducing the width of theshank. In any lot of shoes, large or small, passingthrough the hands of the rough rounder there mustbe tne same variation of margin according to sizeand design. The rough rounding machine cuts also a littleslit or channel along the edge in the bottom of thesole. This channel was formerly cut by hand. Itspurpose is to allow a covering for the stitchingthat Heel Seat Nailing. The process of rough round-ing deals simply with that part of the shoe in frontof the heel to which the welt has been sewed.
