Supernova research, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. Panel of images showing the region where supernova SN1997ff was found (top, white box), its home galaxy (lower left, white arrow), and the supernova itself (white spot, lower right). SN1997ff is some 10 billion light years from Earth, in the constellation of Ursa Major. The top image shows the northern Hubble Deep Field (HDF-N), containing numerous distant galaxies. The images were obtained using the HST's Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WPFC2) and the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS). The supernova was found by comparing images from 1995 and 1997.
