When President Lincoln called forvolunteers in 1861, at the breaking outof the War of the Rebellion, hundreds ofthe best youths and men of Laconia In 1863 Laconia voted to pay abounty of $300 to those who might bedrafted, or their substitutes, and theselectmen were authorized to advance-all bounties, town, state, and volunteers, to the amount of $500each. In 1864 it was voted to pay sol-diers a bounty of 5100 for one year, $200for two years, and S300 for three years,to all enlisted men, and $200 to menwho might be drafted. In December ofthe same year, it was voted to pay abounty of $600 to enrolled men whoenlisted for three years. When the first call for three monthsmen came from Washington, a full com-.
