Grinnell Glacier, Montana, USA in 1936. Image 1 of 2. This image of Grinnell Glacier, taken in 1900, shows the glacier filling the basin from left to right. Glaciers are large, slow-moving expanses of ice, formed from compacted layers of snow. They are sensitive to climate change and in recent years most have retreated dramatically. See image C014/5138 for an image of the same glacier as seen in 2010.
