OF AMEKICAN BIOGKAPJIY. 259. BARLOW, Samuel Latham Mitchill, law-yer, was bom in Granville, Hampden county, Mass.,June 5, 1826, son of Samuel Bancroft Barlow, aphysician. His ancestors emigrated to this countryfrom England in 1620. After practicing medicinefor some time in Connecticut, Dr. Barlow removedto New York with his family. Young Barlow an-swered an advertisement, through which he obtaineda situation with Willett &Greig, attorneys. This was in1842, and his pay was $1 perweek. Seven years later hewas admitted to the bar, andmade manager of the firm witha salary of $3,000. He was sosuccessful in conducting theaffairs of the firms clientsthat it was frequently suggest-ed to him that he shouldenterbusiness on his own was quick, intelligent, fullof tact, and thoroughly un-derstood law.
