Consider-able difficulty was experienced in holding up the oldbulkhead, as it had rotted badly, and timber bracinghad to be placed and the concrete wall built aroundsame. Much care had to be observed also, as sewerand water mains were located behind the wooden bulk-head. Earth was thrown out below, and scraped behinda finished section, the excavating being done with aone-yard Haywood clam-shell bucket, deriving its powerfrom an 8j4xl0 Lambert engine (as shown in cut). Onthis portion of the improvement, the material for theconcrete forms was delivered to the mixer by wheel-barrows and distributed by chutes to the forms. On Division 5, the earth was excavated and piled onthe upper side and levelled otT and a construction trackwas laid on it, and the had sufficient elevationto permit of chuting the concrete.
