Dipteronotus fish fossil. Sandstone block containing a fossilised Dipteronotus fish. The fish is 10 centimetres long. This specimen dates from around 240 million years ago, during the Triassic. This fossil was found in the Voltzia sandstone quarries of the Vosges mountain range in northern France, and is part of the Grauvogel-Gall collection, held in Strasbourg, France. At this time, there was a large delta in what is now the Vosges region. Repeated sediment deposition and droughts led to the formation of fossils.
