These diagrams can he compared withFigures 6 and 7. which show the same valve i)arts for the typeK brake equipment. - AB SERVICE PORTIONFEED GROOVE CLOSED B. A. R. Quick Ser. Vol. ^At. Ex/ ^B. C. The parts of the AB service portion shown in the diagram ofFigure 12 are in release position and in Figure 11 the parts areshown in the position where the piston and graduating valve havemoved toward application to bring the spring stop in the pistonstem against the main slide valve. This movement has closed thefeed groove with the quick service port about to open and is ac-complished by a very small pressure dit¥erential because it is onlynecessary to overcome the piston and small graduating valve fric-tion. The effect of this friction is reduced by the increased diameterof the AB piston. It will be noted that in order to initiate quick service (seeFig. 13) the piston dififerential must increase sufficiently to over-come the spring in the piston stem. The resistance of this springis a dependably constant value which provides the necessary stabil-ity against undesired brake applications that might otherwise becaused by unavoidable minor variation
