HAMILTON, a parish,burgh, and market-town, inthe Middle ward of the countyof Lanark; including the vil-lage of Fernigair, and con-taining 10,862 inhabitants, of/jwhom 8876 are in the town, ^11 miles (S. This placeappears to have been distin-guished at a very early periodas a royal residence, underthe appellation of Cadzow, of which name, however, theorigin and signification are now unknown. In 1153,and also in 1289, the monarchs held their courts here;and it continued to be a royal manor till the battle ofBannockburn, immediately after which it was conferredby Bruce upon Walter Fitzgilbert de Hamilton, ancestorof the present ducal family of that name, in whose pos-session it has ever since remained. In 1445, James II.,by charter dated the 3rd of July, created James, thenproprietor of the estate, first Lord Hamilton ; anderected the manor of Cadzow into a barony, which took. Burgh Seal. H A M I its name from the family of its possessor. In the year1474, Lord Hamilton married the Princess Mary, eldestdaughter of the king, and widow of the Earl of Arran,by virtue of which alliance his descendants were, afterthe death of James V., recognised by parliament as heirsof the Crown in the event of the death of Mary, Queenof Scots. On their accompanying that princess intoFrance, they were created Dukes of Chatelherault inthat kingdom ; and they were subsequently made Dukesof Hamilton by Charles I., and Dukes of Brandon inEngland by Queen Anne.
