Thomas Gainsborough (died 1788) was an English portrait painter and landscape artist. He was a founding member of England's Royal Academy of the Arts. Among his best known works are The Blue Boy, Portrait of Mrs. Graham, The Painter's Daughters, and Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher. This painting, titled Duchess of Devonshire, is in the collection of Earl Spencer, This delightful painting, one of the gems of the Althorp collection, is considered to be one of Gainsborough's greatest achievements in full-length portraits. Her name was Georgiana Cavendish, and she is an ancestor, via her illegitimate daughter Eliza Courtney, of Sarah, duchess of York. Diana, Princess of Wales, was her great, great, grandniece.
