It was set-tled by the founding of Harvard College in 1636, onlysixteen years after the little band of Pilgrims landed atPlymouth. One of its most famous graduates duringthe colonial days was the Reverend Cotton Mather. Hetook his degree at fifteen, and three years later he wasalready so famous for his learning that he received anurgent call to become a pastor in far-away New refused, became his fathers assistant at the NorthChurch in Boston ; and at the North Church he re-mained for more than forty years.
