In 1886 Dr. Keefe located in Providence, bavin,chosen surgery as the medium through which his talentlearning and skill might be best employed for the lienelof his fellow-men. While always conducting an cxtersive private practice, almost from the time of his coning to Providence he has been connected with instititional work. He soon became visiting surgeon on th. BIOGRAPHICAL 339 staff of the Rhode Island Hospital, a position he holdsat the present time, and he is also consulting surgeonto St. Josephs Hospital, at Providence, the ProvidenceCity Hospital, the L3ing-In Hospital, of Providence,the Woonsocket Hospital, and the Pawtucket MemorialHospital. For eighteen years Dr. Keefe was an activemember of the staff of St. Josephs Hospital, it havingbeen his privilege to sow the seed of suggestion thatled to its establishment and to advise and confer withthe Catholic clergy who had its founding in charge, andfrom its earliest plan until the present, its welfare hasbeen his intimate concern. In scientific research and efforts Dr. Keefe enjoyedclose association with famous heads of departments atlohns Hopkins Hospital, among them Dr. Halstead,Dr. Kelley, and Dr. Osier (now Sir William Osier).The years of his professional labor in large hospitals,productive of good as they were, had
