St Nicholas [serial] . FEAR GOD. FEAR. NOUGHT-~T The last English design shown is for a dearlittle girl who must be related to Bo-Peep. Shehas apparently come up from the meadow toreport that her spring lambs and mint are doingwell. Her dolly is tightly clasped in her arms, and she smiles in a most contented design is by May Chatteris Fisher, of Bir-mingham. She is known on the other side ofthe ocean for her pleasing book illustrationsand decorative drawings. The two upper plates on page 46 were made in Germany, like so many useful thingswe moderns use. The first one, by ProfessorHildebrandt, is for his little daughter Elisabeth, and has long been one of my favorites among. 45 plates for children. The little girls head in theheart of the flower and the simple scroll bearingthe name so plainly printed are to me eminentlyappropriate for child-hoods days. Profes-sor Hildebrandt hasmade numerous andelaborate book-plates,but there are none ofthem I prefer to this. Waltrud Schultesplate is a characteristicmodern German design, and is full to overflow-ing with the young lady and her treasures. Wesee her at her desk, deeply engrossed in sorrjefascinating tale, while dolly, knitting, and toysawait her ladyships pleasure. Now, judging by the examples shown, whichare examples of the best, we may ask, what arethe especial features of a successful plate for achild? First, as to size. Little book-plates aresuitable for little people ; but as many books forchildren are quite large, this rule of smallnessneed not be absolute. It is nice to have a de-sign reproduced in two sizes, so as to be suitablefor large and small books. But if you have onlyone size have it small. T
