The following yearhe was chosen by Pitt to be Brigadier in the Louisbourg expedition. After thefall of Louisbourg and the destruction of the French villages in Gaspe, Wolfereturned to England. On November 22 he wrote to Pitt offering to serve nextyear in America, and particularly in the St. Lawrence. Pitt replied by givinghim the rank of Major-General in America, and the command of the projectedexpedition against Quebec.^ See p. 331, note
