Rosette nebula (NGC 2237), optical image. The Rosette nebula is an emission nebula containing gas and dust clouds. The red glow is caused by hydrogen gas being ionised by radiation from the hot young stars (open cluster NGC 2244) at the nebula's centre. The strong stellar wind from these stars has sculpted the Rosette's central hole. This nebula lies approximately 4500 light years from Earth, in the constellation Monoceros. This image was produced using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, Mauna Kea, Hawaii, USA.
