Montgomery avenue, says the report,should be extended through to Market and Fre-mont, forming, with the latter, a wide thoroughfarefrom North Beach to the region of the mail addition, it is proposed to widen Clay and Sacra-ment by closing Commercial street, a narrowstreet between them; to widen the roadway of San-some street, and level its grade, passing it underBroadway, thereby providing easy access to themanufacturing region at the foot of Telegraph , the widening of Pacific street, which passesover the saddle between Nob Hill and Russian Hill,and affords a practicable grade from the ferry to theWestern Addition, is suggested. All these changes,according to the estimate in the report, would costabout $6,500,000, and would add ten times theircost to the citys assessed valuation in ten J^.8 THE NEW SAN FRANCISCO In this way they would pay for themselves and soonbring in an annual profit over the amount requiredto pay off the necessary bonds. The same reportplaces the cost of an auxiliary salt water fire systemat $1,500,000. There seems every probability thatall these changes will be made in the near future. It is very likely also that other improvementsincluded in the Burnham plans will be made withina short time—changes which combine esthetic valuewith financial advantage. Such, for instance, arethe proposed series of boulevards up to and aroundNob Hill and Russian Hill, and the wide avenueconnecting Van Ness avenue and Market streetwith the Mail Docks at the foot of Second street.
