Colonel Clement Biddle, also of Revolution-ary renown, was ,1 great-grandfather of Col. Cadwalader. After the close of the Civil War Colonel Cadwaladerreceived the appointment as clerk in charge of the Bank-ruptcy Department of the U. S. District Court, whichhe held for a number of years. In 1S72 he resumed theprofession of medicine, in which he is still engaged. 306 OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND NAVY (volunteer). BRIGADIER-GENERAL JOSEPH BAILEY. (deceased). Brigadier-General Joseph Bailey was born in Salem, Ohio, April 28, 1827 ; killed near Nevada, Newton County,Missouri, March 21, 1867. He entered the military ser-vice of the United States July 2, 1861, as captain in theFourth Wisconsin Infantry. The regiment was orderedto Maryland, and assigned to the expedition under Gen-eral B. F. Butler which occupied New Orleans after itsreduction by Farraguts fleet in April, 1862. Bailey wasappointed acting engineer of the defences of New Orleansin December, 1862, and while so detailed was promotedto be major, May 30, 1863. A month later he becamelieutenant-colonel. In August, 1863, the regiment waschanged from infantry to cavalry, and Lieutenant-ColonelBailey was sent home on recruiting service, returning toduty with his regiment in February, 1864, in time toaccompany the army of General N. P. Banks in the RedRiver campaig
