Don't walk on the plants sign in garden at Holzmarkt25 Holzmarktstrasse,Friedrichshain-Berlin The Holzmarkt is a Co-operative project for creatives run by former anti-gentrification Bar25 club regulars. It houses Katerblau nightclub, Pampa beach bar, Fame restaurant, galleries, bars, shops, studios & Mörchenpark riverside communal garden. The area on the river Spree near Berlin’s Ostabahnhof station was an industrial wasteland in the 1990s and like similar sites was occupied for creative use. Juval Dieziger and Christoph Klenzedorf opened the nightclub Bar25 on the site. The area was soon a target for developers and the holding company SpreeUrban planned high-rise office blocks. When the plan was discarded in 2012 the plot of land was put out to tender and the Swiss pension fund Abendrot bought the site for €10million and leased it back to a co-operative founded by Bar25 supporters. With the help of architects, the co-operative planned a creative village with flexible spaces. Architects Hütten & Paläste provided a basic design for the site with several four-storey buildings that were suitable for a variety of uses. The rest of the site would be allowed to grow in an informal manner to provide spaces for a range of uses including artists’ studios, shops, cafes and bars. The Holzmarkt is a successful social creative & cultural area but it is under threat as proposed new building development in the area would possibly result in a 9pm curfew being imposed. This would severely impact the present use of the area.
