The boilers are of the conical connection type,provided with brick arches, combustion chambers 36 in. long,tubes 18 ft. long and superheaters. Mallet Type The Mallet type locomotives, railroad Class Z-3, are simi-lar to previous 2-8-8-2 locomotives used on the NorthernPacific. They are employed as helpers in freight service onthe Rocky Mountain and Montana divisions where grades are.
