In the past Chott el Jerid was a part of the Mediterranean Sea. Now it is the largest salt lake in Tunisia (from 5000 to 7000 km2 - depend of source), dried up in hot season. Tunisian build a causeway crossing lake. There are many souvenir stalls on the side of causeway.
