Cryptosporidiosis is a disease caused by a microscopic parasite called Cryptosporidium parvum. Most people who get crypto have watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, an upset stomach, or a slight fever but crypto can cause severe illness for a long time in people infected with HIV and can be fatal. Crypto is easily spread by contaminated food or water, or direct contact with an infected person or animal. About 15% to 20% of people with AIDS are infected with crypto.
