Mid-1600s Funeral Chapel, the Eglise Saint-Miliau in Guimiliau, Finistère, Brittany, France. On the entablature over the entrance is a Latin inscription: Memento Mori (Remember that you must die).

Eglise Saint-Miliau, Guimiliau, Haut-Léon, Finistère, Brittany, France: entrance to Funeral Chapel, built in 1648 against perimeter wall of the cemetery. The origin of the Funeral Chapel goes back to the cult of the dead when bones were exhumed after burial. On the entablature over the entrance is a Latin inscription: Memento Mori (Remember that you must die). The door has a semi-circular pediment and Doric columns and there are Ionic columns along the facade. Of the original 16th century church, the belfry and tower are all that remain. It was only in the 17th century that the church took on its present appearance with improvements and extensions: the addition of a main porch jutting out from the south facade and of a sacristy and the widening of side aisles. Guimiliau (Gwik Miliau in Breton, Miliau’s village) got its name from Miliau, Count of Cornouaille, murdered in 551. It is in the Haut-Léon region of Finistère -
