Originality of thought and action isone of the prime movers of business, and in the organ-izations in the Pittsburgh district of which M. B. Cainis the head, this is the basis of success. From mercan-tile operations of comparatively small scope, Mr. Cain,about 19TO, branched out into real estate and the pro-motion of business opportunities, and the decade of his. M^. /^.^^-^-J-^ BIOGRAPHICAL 57 activity in these lines includes a vast amount of pro-ductive effort, mutually profitable to him and his asso-ciates and valuable in its relation to the general pros-perity of the district. Mr. Cain is a native of County Roscommon, Ireland,son of John Cain. John Cain brought his family fromIreland to the United States in 1872, and from that timeuntil his death, July 8, 1917, was a resident of WesternPennsylvania. M. B. Cain received practical prepara-tion for the work of life in the Pittsburgh schools, andin 1890 entered grocery dealings, in which he remainedfor seventeen years. Success attended his endeavors inthis line, but he planned a broader, more responsiblework, and when the time and conditions seemed favor-able he launched his enterprise.
