Casa della Fontana Grande, The House of Large Fountain, Pompeii. Tragic marble masks decorate the sides of the niche for the fountain. Second Century BC; excavated in 1826-27, 1943. Pompeii was buried under meters of ash and pumice after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 The preserved site features excavated ruins of streets and houses that visitors can freely explore.
