Comparisons by Single Commodities Charts have been made for a few of the most important commod-ities. They show that the price fluctuations in the two wars pre-sent great diversity. In some articles the Civil War riss wasvastly greater than the rise during the present war. Anthracitecoal is in this class, and in a lesser degree, lead pipe, sugar,and hogs. Still more striking is the case of cotton; but cottonis not charted because the Civil War rise was so extreme that achart drawn to the scale used here would, be over a yard articles, on the contrary, such as wheat, wool, and hideshave risen higher during the present war than they did in thesixties. Finally, there are a number of cases in which the coursefollowed by prices was not notably different: for example, ironwire, cattle
