Miller,won by 15 minutes. Next year, 1849, there wasno race until the regular Juneregatta, which occupied twodays, June 5 and 7. On thefirst day the course was theregular one, but the secondday the start was off RobbinsReef, and the yachts wentaround the Sandy Hook light-ship for the first TheMaria came in ahead on thefirst day, but was disqualifiedon account of fouling theUltra. There started in the first class theschooners Cornelia and Siren, and the sloopMaria, and in the second class only theschooner Sybil. Evidently a voyage aroundthe lightship was looked upon with somedistrust by the yachtsmen of 1849. TheMaria came in ahead, but lost on allowanceof time to the schooner Cornelia. TheSybil, of course, had a walk over. In those days, how-ever, this going aroundthe lightship was con-sidered a great feat, andby many, a most im-prudent proceeding.
