Hooke telegraph system. Historical illustration of the optical telegraph system presented to the Royal Society in 1684 by English natural philosopher Robert Hooke (1635-1703). The lecture was titled 'On Showing a Way How to Communicate One's Mind at Great Distances'. Hooke anticipated many of the features of later systems, such as those developed in the 1790s by the Chappe brothers. Hooke proposed a code and cut-out symbols, as well as protocols for signal transmission. However, his system was never used in practice.
