Engraving depicting a Gramme dynamo in situ. Demonstrated at Wells & Co's Shoreditch Ironworks, London, powering Jablockhoff candles, this was the first permanent electric lighting in England. Gramme improved the armature and solved the problem of overheating, making possible the exploitation of Faraday's 1831 demonstration of electromagnetic induction.
