Tipping bucket rain gauge. Rain gauges, also called pluviometers, are used to measure the amount of rain (precipitation) falling at a particular location. Tipping bucket rain gauges funnel rain into a see-saw-like container that tips the water out when full to trigger and record a signal. This allows the intensity of the rainfall to be monitored. This equipment is being operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service.
