The Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Washington. Born 12thFeb 1809, elected Pres. in 1860, won re-election in 1864, on Apr 14th 1865 he was shot by John Wilkes Booth. Daniel Chester French's sculpture of the President Is 19' 9" tall and 19' wide. It used up 28 bocks of white georgia marble and above it stand the words, "In this temple as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union the memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever". And from the Gettysburg address "Four score and seven years ago,,,,,that all men are created equal ,,,,,,that these men shall not have died in vain - that this nation under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from this earth." And from his second inaugural address, "With malice towards none; with charity for all, with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds ....". In 1939 Marian Anderson sang from the steps to an audience of 70,000 as well as a nation-wide radio audience. On August 28th 1963 made his " I Have a Dream" speech following the March For Jobs and Freedom rally. The statue Looks down the Mall In Washington toward The Houses of Congress.
