The longitudinal trunks are mainly, though not exclusively, in- tersegmental. From them the main stem vessels of the indi- vidual are formed, and from or to these latter the segmental vessels appear to pro- ceed as branches or tributaries. In the course of development the longitudinal trunks become the most im- portant trunks in the individual, and they are formed before the segmental vessels make their appear- ance.
