On a bluff overlooking the city of NewHaven stands a monument dedicated tothe soldiers of four wars. On thatface of the monument inscribed to Revo-lutionary heroes are these three names : 64 BENNINGTON AND ITS The Walloomsac Tav Extreme, perhaps, in its conciseness, thisinscription evinces an unusual apprecia-tion of the historic importance of thethree engagements named. Had Lex-ington been united with Concord—forthe two engagements were one runningiight — and Bennington with Saratoga,this epitome of the Revolution wouldhave been complete. Creasy says, Norcan any event be said to have exercisedmore important influence on the future ofmankind than the complete defeat ofBurgoynes expedition in 1777.
