Brouhot petrol engine. Historical illustration of a petrol engine on wheels, produced by the Brouhot engineering company of Vierzon, France. The company was founded by Charles Brouhot in the 1890s to make agricultural engines, moving into car production by 1898. Industrial petrol engines such as these were based on the earlier gas engines, with carburettors and vaporisers added to enable oil-based liquid fuels to be used. The engines could be stationary or, as here, mounted on wheels.
