The Tongariro crossing is often described as the best one day hike in New Zealand. It is a demanding 17km (10 mile) trek through a bleak, active volcanic landscape. In this picture, the tiny figures of walkers can be seen descending from the past the active vents beside the Red Crater. Mounts Tongariro and Ngauruhoe were used by Peter Jackson to depict Mount Doom in his adaptation of Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings"
