TAROT - 'RIDER WAITE' DECK OF PAMELA COLEMAN-SMITH Four cards, from the series of 22 cards in the Charles Walker Collection, of the so-called Rider Waite deck: The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance and The Devil. This particular deck, in the CW Collection, consists of a full set of hand-coloured card from the 1910 series designed by Pamela Coleman Smith, and claimed wrongly by Arthur Edward Waite to be 'his' design. Pamela Coleman Smith's abbreviated signature appears on each of the cards, which were used in the 1911 edition of, The Key to the Tarot, authored by Waite. The deck is wrongly called the Rider-Waite deck, for although later cards were copyrighted in the first Rider publication, they were not the copyright of Waite (as Rider thought), nor were they properly speaking a Rider deck - they were merely used as a supportive pack, published alongside a book brought out by this firm. The long and the short of it is, that the 22 major cards in this present series consist of the 1910 black and white cards designed by Coleman Smith, which have been hand-coloured. Each of these cards bears slight (yet significant) variations on the colours given by Pamela Coleman Smith, who was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, and who attempted rigorously to adhere to the symbolism favoured by this Order.
