INTRODUCTION URING the past ten or more yearsI have been dehvering a lecture inNew York and elsewhere, which Ihave called Broadway, Old andNew, from New York to this volume, I have expandedthe lecture to book size. Broadway is the longest of themodern streets of the world, though it is surpassedin length by two of ancient Roman construction: theAppian Way from Rome to Brundusium, 350 miles, andWatling Street in England, from Dover via London toChester and York, thence in two branches to Carlisle andthe Wall near Newcastle. These have, however, fallenfrom their high estate; and of the latter road traces onlyare found in some parts of its course of over three hundredmiles; remains of the former are sometimes unearthed,though a more modern road, built by Pope Pius 1789 parallels the ancient roadway from Rome toAlbano, nineteen miles northeast of the Eternal City. From the beginning of the nineteenth century Broad-way has been the main artery of the city, and its growthhas
