Hair cut in the Antarctic. Russian groom Anton Omelchenko (left, 1883-1932) cutting the hair of Irish explorer and British Royal Navy petty officer Patrick Keohane (right, 1879-1950) at the Cape Evans base camp in January 1912 during the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913). Also known as the Terra Nova Expedition, the primary expedition objectives were scientific. Led by Robert Falcon Scott, the shore party of 34 (including Omelchenko and Keohane) spent two seasons exploring on and around the Ross Ice Shelf. Scott and four others died in 1912 returning from their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. Photograph by Herbert George Ponting.
