The cartoon was admired and studied by the greatest masters of theday. Lastly his world-renowned Last Supper is nearly effaced from the wall of theRefectory in Milan, which was long used as a stable for horses! But even in its decay ittestifies to the almost superhuman depth and creative power of the Master ; and stands tothis day an unapproachable wonder, and one of the highest developments ever attainedby Art. The influence which Leonardo—the inventor of chiaro-oscuro,—had upon hiscontemporaries, is incalculable; and everything that remains from his hand bears anirresistible charm.
