Monarch is a typical greyhound of the highest form, and for that reason has been selected as the subject of the artist's work. Monarch is a pure white dog of great power and development, and weighs iu coursing condition sixty-two pounds- He was whelped, March 20, 1SS0, and is owned by Mr. J. F. Carroll, of this city, an enthusiastic ad- mirer of greyhounds, and a liberal patron of coursing in its true form, on the plains. Monarch comes from a winning strain. He is fall brother to Stonewall Jackson and Lady Franklyn and half brother to Paul Jones, all prize winning coursers. He was sired by Dr. Meare's Monarch his dam Branch. Dr. Meare's Monarch by imp. Speculation out of imp. Queen Messenger. Branch by imp. Spot out of Minnetta by imp. Mas- ter Cartright, son of Master McFadden, brother to Lord Lur- gan's famous Master McGrath. Monarch's record is an almost unbroken chain of victories. He won first prize in a 32 dog stake, at Merced, in Novem- ber, 1SS1. Divided first and second with Paul Jonos in a 24 dog stake, at Merced, November, 1882. Divided first and second with Paul Jones in a 32 dog stake, at Merced, in April, 1883, and was winner of first in 2S dog stake, at Mer- ced, November, 1883. In addition he has won several matches, at Byron and Livermore, when he was pitted for private stakes against the best dogs of the coast. The divided prizes mentioned above were at the regular meetings of the California Club, and came about from the fact that both Monarch and Paul Jones were and are owned by Mr. Car- roll, and no run off was ne
