He received the degrees of the Scottish Rite in 1861, andwas Thrice Potent Grand Master of Lowell Lodge of Perfectionfrom 1864 to 1867. In December, 1867, he was elected Com-mander-in-Chief of Massachusetts Consistory, and continuedin office until the union of the Consistories at Boston, Feb. 15,1871. May 22, 1863, Brother Hutchinson was created a Ins. Gen. of the Thirty-third Degree and Honorary Memberof the Supreme Council. His death occurred at Lowell,Aug. 1, Benjamin Pope 33 52 Massachusetts Consistory BENJAMIN POPE 33° Brother Pope was born in Waterford, Ireland, in January,1829, and, with his father and family, became a resident ofBoston before he had completed his first year of life. His career as a successful business man was characterizedby energy and discretion, and a conscientious and prompt dis-charge of all engagements. He was twice elected a memberof the Common Council, and for the last year of his connectionwith that body was its presiding officer. At the time of hisdeath he was a member of the Board of Aldermen, respectedby his colleagues, not only for his social and manly qualities,but for his sound judgment, prudent wisdom and even justice.
