Rhone glacier and its newly formed glacial lake (left). A protective cover (bottom centre) is used to reduce ablation (melting) in the area where an artificial ice cave has been installed for tourists to enter the interior of the glacier. Around 1850, at the end of the Little Ice Age, the ice reached all the way to the photographer's position.
