During World War One, Pvt. C. E. Painter from the 101st Regt. Inf. used a church bell in an evacuated town in Flirey, France, as a gas alarm on May 31, 1918. This photograph, numbered 14269, was taken on that day and was later released by the Censor on June 24, 1918.
