Johannes Gutenberg (around 1400-1468), bronze statue. Part of a cathedral is seen at left. Gutenberg invented the movable type, a type of printing press. He produced the first printed book in 1456, commonly known as the Gutenberg Bible, which he is seen holding. His invention and the subsequent mechanization of the printing press set in motion the widespread and cheap production of literature. Photographed in Mainz, Germany.
