The origin of this distinguished city is too remote to besatisfactorily ascertained. It was certainly in existenceprevious to the arrival of the Romans in Britain. It wascalled by them Dinoveroum and Davenoum, which namesome derive from the British word Durwherny which signi-fies a rapid stream, and to have been applied to this river,because the Stour here flows with some impetuosity.
