Thismanoeuvre is useful in clearing out the remains of an abortion, and in deter-mining the attachments of a polypus, or the situation and extent of a malignantaffection of the Diagnostic Curettage. The curette has a loop end (A) or a scoop-shaped end (B). Note that the cervixhas to be dilated sufficiently to admit the curette and that the uterus is drawndown and straightened out in curetting. The volsella, drawing down andfixing the cervix as in fig. 17, is not shown. After curetting, the uterus iswashed out with a two-way catheter (C). The fragments of endometriumremoved are collected in a dish placed beneath the tubular handle of thespeculum. 28 GYNECOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS The advantage of the finger over the curette in clearing out an incompleteabortion or localising a cancer is obvious. When the finger is to be introduced into the uterine cavity it is betterto take the volsella off the cervix and use the upper hand to press downthe fundus on the finger (fig. 18). By this means we can not only steadythe uterus more efficiently in clearing out the remains of an abortion, butthe thickness of its walls and their relation to a tumour can be betterestimated. For
