Heinrich Gustav Magnus (1802-1870), German chemist and physicist. Magnus was born at Berlin into a wealthy family, being eductaed privately until entering the University of Berlin in 1822. After study visits to Stockholm and Paris he returned to Berlin to join the faculty, where he remained for the rest of his career. He was a very popular and gifted teacher and a researcher of diverse interests. He discovered the first platino-ammonium compounds (Magnus' green salt) and many sulphonic acids. In physics he studied the deflection of spherical projectiles due to their rotation, known as the Magnus effect, that is used these days in ball sports such as football and cricket. He also wrote papers on electrolysis, electrical induction and gas properties. Magnus is remembered as an experimenter more than as a theorist.
