Thishigher Christian education will doubt-less remain chiefly the work of thechurch, perhaps in its reformed SundaySchool. But a still more important part ofChristian education with which thepastors class needs to be coordinatedis the home training before the chidcomes to the class. The few years ofthe childs life before he comes to thechurch constitute the most importantperiod of his education. They are the. years of the awakening and luxuriantgrowth of the senses, the emotions andthe imagination. These are the facul-ties which underlie reason and havemost to do with the formation of char-acter. If a childs senses are directedinto healthful exercises, if his emo-tions are regulated and guided aright,if his imagination is kept pure andsane, then when later, reason awakens,he will use his reason for good underlying faculties are themotive power of character and if theyare given a strong momentum towardGod and the right, the child is safe. Forpeople go wrong not so much from lackof a rational knowledge that things arewrong, as from lack of inclination andpower to do the right. We may use thewords guided and regulated ad-visedly in regard to these faculties un-derlying reason in the little child. Wedo not need to stimulate or force from it, so full is the child ofactivity along all these lines, that ittakes a very active person to keep upwith him. What is n
