E. L. Gibson, a witness on behalf of the prosecution, was called,sworn, examined by Mr. Barnes, and testified as follows: I am one of the detective officers of the city and county of SanFrancisco, and was such on the 13th and 14th days of April, when Iwas sent to Emanuel Baptist church on Bartlett street, between 22ndand 23rd streets, in this city, for the purpose of making a search of thechurch and premises, which I did on the evening of the 13th, between10 and 12 oclock. I searched all except the belfry. I could not get inthere, as there was no handle upon the door and I had no key. The lockwas mutilated. I mean the belfry door which is on the gallery floor ofthe church and opens toward the easterly end of the church, and throughwhich you enter to pass up into the belfry tower. Shortly after 9 oclock,on the morning of April 14th Police Officer Reihl and Mr. Sademan, thejanitor of the church, and myself broke the door open and entered the.
