Drug-Resistant Salmonella Serotype Typhi, 3D Model

Three-dimensional (3D) computer-generated image of a number of Salmonella serotype Typhi bacteria. Salmonella serotype Typhi causes typhoid fever, a potentially life-threatening disease. People with typhoid fever usually have a high fever, abdominal pain, and headache. Typhoid fever can lead to bowel perforation, shock, and death. Physicians rely on drugs such as ceftriaxone, azithromycin, and ciprofloxacin for treating patients with typhoid fever, however, Salmonella serotype Typhi is showing resistance to: ceftriaxone, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, to which resistance is so common that it cannot be routinely used.
